Frequently Asked Questions
Take a megohm reading between the terminals and the sheath before connecting power. Below 1 megohm means moisture is inside. Remove it by baking the heater at low temperature or energizing it at reduced voltage before full operation. Do not power it normally with moisture still present.
A sheath material not matched to the liquid being heated. Chlorides, acids, and aggressive chemicals attack certain materials and eat into the surface over time. Stainless steel suits general water and mild chemicals. Incoloy 800 handles more aggressive environments. Titanium is used where other materials would not last. The sheath is chosen based on what the heater goes into, not just the temperature.
Stainless steel, Incoloy 800, Inconel 600, copper, titanium, and alkaline-grade materials. Glass and silica covers are available for specific types. The right material depends on the liquid and the chemicals present.
Pitting reduces sheath wall thickness. Once it perforates, the heating element contacts the liquid and fails immediately. Shallow isolated pitting may still have life remaining. Widespread pitting or any surface breakthrough means replace it before it fails in the tank.
The heater runs continuously without cycling off. Without a separate high-limit cutout, it keeps running until it damages itself. A high-limit switch installed as a backup prevents this. Confirm the thermostat is cycling correctly during routine maintenance.
Check the sensor is properly seated first. A loose sensor reads air or tank wall temperature instead of the liquid. If the position is correct, test against an independent thermometer at a known temperature. A reading consistently off by a fixed amount means the sensor has drifted and needs replacing.
The exposed section above the liquid level overheats rapidly, degrading the sheath, internal insulation, and heating wire. A low liquid level cutoff switch shuts the heater down before the element is exposed. Fit one in any tank where the liquid level varies during operation.
Higher watt density means a hotter sheath surface, which accelerates scale in hard water and corrosion in aggressive liquids. For general water heating, lower watt density gives longer service life. For process applications, the right watt density depends on the specific liquid and temperature. We confirm this during ordering alongside tank size, immersion length, and voltage.
